Jessica Nelin and her husband have installed infrared heating panels in two homes – and are completely sold. Partly because of the reduced energy consumption, and partly because of the wonderful warmth.

– It creates such a nice, soft warmth. I don't understand why everyone doesn't have infrared heating panels, says Jessica Nelin.

The first time she was introduced to infrared heating panels was at a home fair in 2017. Jessica's husband Jan had been on a little excursion on his own among the stands and said excitedly when he saw Jessica again. "Come with me, here's something you have to see."

The couple had recently purchased a large farm in Uppland that had been empty for several years. The insulation was poor and the annual electricity consumption was around 87,000 kilowatt hours.

– We insulated and considered adding underfloor heating. But the floors were so nice that we didn't want to break them up. Instead, we tested infrared heating panels because we became so interested in them at the home fair, says Jessica Nelin.

Electricity consumption was halved

Panels were installed in a couple of rooms, and during the first winter, electricity consumption was almost halved.

The farm was sold in 2019. A 152 square meter two-story house in Åkersberga became the new home.

– With an old air/water heat pump and underfloor heating in a couple of rooms. Very poor heating upstairs, says Jessica Nelin.

So we invested in infrared heating panels again. Initially in two bedrooms and the hall on the upper floor and in a TV room downstairs. At Christmas 2021, a room that was cold also got a panel.

– We reduced our consumption quickly. And after all the infrared heating panels were installed, we had January that was 22 percent lower compared to the same month last year.

Comfortable warmth is an important plus factor

The fact that electricity consumption has decreased is one thing, but perhaps the biggest advantage of having infrared heating panels is the pleasant warmth. And the same temperature all the time, from ceiling to floor.
– I just love walking on warm floors. It's like putting your feet in sun-warmed sand in the summer. It's thanks to the infrared heating panels, says Jessica Nylén.
There are a total of seven panels in the house now. All are controlled by a thermostat.

Thermostat of course!

– A thermostat is a given, you have to be able to regulate the temperature you want. Since the panels do not heat the air but all surfaces, the floor, walls and furniture get the same temperature as the thermostat is set to. The panels are on for maybe ten to fifteen minutes and then turned off for an hour or two. Yet you have a constant temperature of 22 degrees. This is because the heat is stored in the surfaces where you are instead of rising to the ceiling, says Jessica Nylén
She thinks that the heat from the infrared heating panels is completely different compared to regular convection heat, such as that coming from traditional elements.
– It's a harsh and dry heat. The heat of the panels is cozy and soft. A completely different thing.

Don't undersize!

One tip Jessica Nelin wants to give to people who are thinking about investing in infrared heating panels is to size them correctly. The right number of watts for the size of the room.
– Don't skimp. Better one panel too many than too few. Make sure you have some margin on the panel's performance. Otherwise, the panel will be turned on too often and that will increase consumption.
She is surprised that so few people know about the positive properties of infrared heating panels. It is probably a matter of information. Although in the Netherlands, knowledge seems to have reached further than in Sweden.
– Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam is heated with infrared heating panels, says Jessica Nelin.

Horses also like the heat

Today, she works with infrared heating herself, but with a focus on stables and agricultural properties, through the company Stallvärme.
– In equestrian sports, we are used to suffering through cold winters in outdated and chilly stable environments, so a colleague and I decided to change that.
They loved the heat from infrared panels and wanted to find solutions that could also work in stables.
– It started with an infrasolarium that we developed ourselves to be able to warm up the horses before training and dry them quickly afterwards. It was a success and now we have just come out with the next model. But over the past year we have also noticed that more and more of our customers want a drier stable environment, above all to remove moisture from the walls and floors, she says and continues:
– I'm glad my husband was at that home fair in 2017, otherwise we wouldn't be where we are today!
