Energy-efficient heating for warehouses, workshops and industrial halls

Warehouses, workshops and industrial halls have completely different heating requirements than offices and homes. High ceilings, large doors and extensive air volumes mean that traditional air-borne heating is often both costly and inefficient.

When warm air rises towards the ceiling while doors are opened and closed, a large part of the energy is lost where it is least useful.

Infrared heating works differently. Instead of primarily heating the air, it heats people, floors, machines, workstations and other surfaces directly. The result is a more comfortable working environment while using the energy where it actually does good.

This is one of the reasons why more and more companies are choosing infrared heating when they want to create high comfort while keeping energy costs under control.

Heat the work surfaces instead of the entire room

In many warehouses and workshops, it is neither practical nor economical to heat the entire building to the same temperature.

Staff often work in specific areas such as:

Packing stations

Workbenches

Production lines

Assembly stations

Cargo areas

Machinery and equipment

By focusing the heat on the surfaces where people actually work, energy consumption can be reduced while comfort is improved.

For many businesses, this is the biggest advantage of infrared heating. Instead of heating thousands of cubic meters of air, the heat can be concentrated to the parts of the premises where it is really needed.

That's why infrared heating is perfect for warehouses and workshops.

Warehouses and workshops are often perceived as cold environments even though the heating system is working at full capacity. High ceilings, large air volumes and frequent air exchange make it difficult for traditional systems to create an even temperature.

Because infrared heat is stored in floors, machines, walls and other surfaces, the heat remains longer compared to traditional heating systems where the heated air quickly collects under the ceiling.

Many businesses also appreciate that infrared heating panels and Dark Heater can be mounted on the ceiling or wall without taking up valuable floor space.

Advantages of infrared heating in warehouses and workshops

More comfortable working environment for staff

Energy-efficient heating

Perfect for high ceilings and large rooms

Efficient spot heating where it is needed

Frees up wall and floor space

Even and comfortable heat

Less heat loss when doors are open

Contributes to drier floors and walls

Long service life and minimal maintenance

How much infrared heating is needed in warehouses and workshops?

For warehouses, workshops and industrial halls, we usually recommend around 150–200 W/m² on the surfaces to be heated.

In many cases, it is significantly more economical to spot heat workstations, packaging areas and production areas instead of trying to heat the entire premises.

To make the sizing simple, we assume 200 W/m² in the table below.

Example of power requirement

Surface to be heated Recommended power
5 m² 1,000W
10 m² 2,000W
30 m² 6,000W
50 m² 10,000W
100 m² 20,000W

The final dimensioning is always affected by ceiling height, insulation, doors, ventilation and desired temperature.

Infrared panel or Dark Heater?

Both infrared panels and Dark Heater work very well in industrial environments, but they are often used in different ways.

Infrared panels are an excellent option when you want to create even basic heating in larger parts of the room or when the ceiling height is relatively normal.

However, Dark Heater is often the most popular choice in warehouses, workshops and industrial halls with high ceilings, steel beams, joists and open work surfaces. The targeted heat makes it possible to create high comfort at specific workstations without having to heat the entire building.

Many companies choose to install Dark Heater above packing stations, assembly lines, workbenches and other areas where staff spend extended periods of time.

As the Nordic region's largest specialist in infrared panels and the Nordic region's largest supplier of Dark Heaters, Infracenter helps companies across the Nordic region choose the right solution based on the premises' conditions every year.

How much electricity does infrared heating actually consume?

A common misconception is that installed capacity and actual energy consumption are the same thing. This is not how it normally works.

When we dimension a facility, we often count on a little extra power to ensure high comfort and that the infrared waves reach all the way down to work surfaces, floors and machines where the heat is most beneficial.

However, this does not mean that the plant operates at full capacity all the time.

Once the desired temperature has been reached, the thermostat automatically controls the heat and adjusts the power as needed. In practice, this means that the infrared heat is normally only active for part of the time.

Depending on the building's conditions, it is common for the system to operate approximately:

30% of the time in well-insulated premises

50% of the time in normal premises

Up to 70% of the time in more demanding conditions

The actual energy consumption is therefore often significantly lower than many people initially think.

High comfort with lower energy requirements

Infrared heating heats people, machines, floors and work surfaces directly instead of just heating the air.

This means that many businesses can create a significantly better working environment without having to heat the entire building to the same temperature. The result is often both greater comfort and lower energy costs.

Developed for professional environments

Since 2014, Infracenter has specialized in infrared heating and developed its own products with a focus on comfort, energy efficiency and long lifespan.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about infrared heating for warehouses and workshops

Why is infrared heating suitable for warehouses and workshops?

Infrared heating heats people and surfaces directly instead of just heating the air. This makes the technology particularly effective in large spaces with high ceilings and open doors.

Is infrared heating energy efficient for industrial halls?

Yes. By heating the work surfaces instead of the entire air volume, energy consumption can often be reduced while improving comfort.

Is Dark Heater suitable for warehouses and workshops?

Yes. Dark Heater is often one of the most popular options in warehouses, workshops and industrial halls where you want to create targeted heat over specific work areas.

Can infrared heating be used as spot heating?

Absolutely. Spot heating is one of the most common uses for infrared heating in industrial environments.

Does infrared heating help with damp and damp rooms?

Yes. Because infrared heating heats floors, walls and other surfaces directly, it helps keep premises drier and more comfortable.

Do infrared heating panels require a lot of maintenance?

No. Our products contain no moving parts and typically require very little maintenance.
