Temperature plays a crucial role in any environment where people exercise, recover or receive treatments. Whether you run a yoga studio, pilates facility, massage clinic, spa, acupuncture clinic or wellness facility, heat affects both comfort, experience and results.
That's why more and more businesses are choosing infrared heating.
Unlike traditional heating systems that primarily heat the air, infrared heating heats people, floors, walls, exercise equipment and other surfaces directly. The result is a more even and comfortable heat without drafts, fan noise or cold zones.
Since 2014, Infracenter has helped thousands of customers create better comfort with infrared heating. Today, we are the largest specialist in infrared panels in the Nordic region and the largest supplier of Dark Heaters. Our products are used in everything from homes and offices to yoga studios, treatment rooms, wellness facilities and commercial properties throughout the Nordic region.
That's why infrared heating is perfect for fitness and wellness environments.
In a yoga studio, treatment room or wellness facility, warming up is about more than just reaching a certain temperature. Heat affects how the body feels, how quickly muscles and joints warm up, and how clients and participants experience the environment.
Traditional heating systems primarily heat the air, which can create temperature differences, drafts and unnecessary air circulation. Infrared heating works differently by heating people and surfaces directly.
This provides several clear advantages:
Even and comfortable heat throughout the room
Faster warming up of muscles and joints
High comfort without drafts or fan noise
Energy-efficient heating
Cleaner indoor environment with less air circulation
Minimal service and maintenance
Quiet operation suitable for yoga, meditation and treatments
How much infrared heat is needed?
As a rule of thumb, we typically expect around 200 W/m² for traditional yoga, Pilates and wellness environments under normal conditions.
For hot yoga where the temperature needs to be significantly higher, we often calculate with around 250 W/m².
These guidelines normally work very well for:
Yoga studios
Pilates studios
PT studios
Mindfulness room
Massage clinics
Spa facilities
Foot care and pedicure
Acupuncture clinics
Naprapaths and chiropractors
Skincare and beauty salons
Wellness center
Example of power requirement
| Size of premises | Yoga, Pilates & wellness (approx. 200 W/m²) | Hot yoga (approx. 250 W/m²) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 m² | 2,000W | 2,500W |
| 25 m² | 5,000W | 6,250W |
| 50 m² | 10,000W | 12,500W |
| 75 m² | 15,000W | 18,750W |
| 100 m² | 20,000W | 25,000W |
These are general guidelines that work for most premises. Factors such as insulation, ventilation, windows, ceiling height and desired temperature always affect the final dimensioning.
Installed power is not the same as electricity consumption
A common misconception is that installed capacity and actual energy consumption are the same thing. This is not how it normally works.
When we design a yoga studio, pilates studio or wellness facility, we often count on a little extra power to ensure high comfort and that the infrared waves reach all the way down to the floor. It is an important part of the pleasant warmth that many people associate with infrared heating and which contributes to the appreciated feeling of warm floors and an even temperature throughout the room.
However, this does not mean that the plant operates at full capacity all the time.
Once the desired temperature has been reached, the thermostat automatically controls the heat and adjusts the power as needed. In practice, this means that the infrared heat is normally only active for part of the time.
Depending on the conditions of the premises, it is common for the system to operate approximately:
30% of the time in well-insulated premises
50% of the time in normal premises
Up to 70% of the time in more demanding conditions
The actual energy consumption is therefore often significantly lower than many people initially think.
Therefore, we do not design for too low power
A system that is too small may indeed provide a lower installed output, but the risk is that comfort will be poorer and that floors, walls and other surfaces will never have time to store enough heat.
By sizing correctly from the start, you will instead get more pleasant warmth, better comfort for the participants and a facility that works calmer and more efficiently over time.
How high should the infrared heater be mounted?
For best results, the infrared heater should be placed at a ceiling height or mounting height of approximately 1.80–2.50 meters. If the heat source is placed too high, it will be further away from the participants or the treatment surface, making the heat feel weaker and less effective.
In rooms with higher ceilings it is therefore common to
Power -panels – the solution most studios choose
The panels provide a soft and pleasant heat that is spread evenly throughout the room. Since the heat is stored in the floor, walls and other surfaces, the temperature is felt to be stable and comfortable throughout the session or treatment.
